Planning a trip to Taiwan?
From cherry blossoms and volcanic landscapes to coastal rock formations, traditional markets, mountain villages and scenic lakes, Taiwan offers much more than most first-time visitors expect. This Taiwan travel guide combines practical planning advice with real experiences from Sarit, who explored Taiwan on an eight-day solo trip during spring.
Whether you are planning your first Taiwan trip from India, looking for a cherry blossom holiday, or hoping to explore Taiwan beyond Taipei, this guide will help you understand where to go, how to get around, what to budget for and which experiences deserve a place in your itinerary.
This guide is based on an IamSaave travel podcast featuring Sarit's Taiwan trip. The itinerary reflects his personal route and pace; you can adjust it according to your interests, fitness, budget and travel dates.

🗺️ Taiwan at a glance: What to know before planning your trip
📅 Recommended trip duration: 7–8 days for a mix of Taipei, coastal attractions, nature and a major lake excursion.
🌿 Best for: Nature lovers, food explorers, solo travellers, photographers and travellers looking for experiences beyond Southeast Asia.
🏙️ Main base: Taipei, with day trips to attractions across northern and central Taiwan.
🚆 Getting around: Taipei MRT, buses, trains, ride-hailing apps and organised day tours.
⛰️ Biggest planning consideration: Taiwan may look small on a map, but mountains, winding roads and long intercity journeys can make travel time substantial.
🛂 Important practical considerations: Visa eligibility, the language barrier, walking distances, weather changes and accommodation costs.
🛂 Taiwan visa requirements for Indian travellers
Visa eligibility should be one of the first things to check when planning a Taiwan trip from India.
In the podcast, Sarit explained that he qualified for Taiwan's online Travel Authorization Certificate because of an eligible visa he held for another country. He completed the application before travelling and carried a printed copy.
However, an existing US, Schengen or other foreign visa does not automatically guarantee entry into Taiwan. Eligibility depends on the applicable nationality-specific rules and qualifying documents.
For Indian passport holders, Taiwan's official Travel Authorization Certificate information specifies conditions including passport validity of at least six months, a confirmed onward or return ticket, and qualifying visa or residence documentation from an eligible country or other qualifying Taiwanese immigration history.
Before booking, check the current requirements directly:
📄 Taiwan Bureau of Consular Affairs – Travel Authorization Certificate
💻 Official online Travel Authorization Certificate application
If you do not qualify for the certificate, check the applicable regular visa process. Rules can change, and airline staff may check your eligibility before boarding.
Keep your passport, approved travel authorization or visa, accommodation details and return ticket accessible. Immigration officers may request supporting documents.
✈️ Flights from India to Taiwan: How to plan your journey
Sarit travelled from India to Taiwan via Bangkok, using a connecting flight.
For your own trip, compare:
🔎 Direct flights, where available, against connecting itineraries.
🌏 Connections through Bangkok and other suitable Asian hubs.
A separate-ticket connection can be cheaper, but it carries additional risks if the first flight is delayed. Allow sufficient time for immigration, baggage collection and check-in if required.
🏨 Where to stay in Taiwan: Why your hotel location matters
Accommodation was one of the most important budgeting lessons from Sarit's trip.
He found that hotels in central areas could be expensive, so he chose accommodation in Taipei's older Wanhua district. His hotel - Hotel Crystal, cost approximately ₹4,500 per night, according to his recollection, and was suitable for a trip where he spent most of the day exploring and returned mainly to sleep.
These figures are historical personal examples, not current price estimates.
📍 How to choose your accommodation
🏙️ Central Taipei: Convenient for transport, restaurants and sightseeing, but potentially more expensive.
🏮 Wanhua and other well-connected neighbourhoods: Worth comparing if you want local markets and access to MRT stations without paying for the most central location.
🚆 Staying outside Taipei: Consider this only when it meaningfully reduces travel time for the places you want to visit. Remote attractions can involve lengthy journeys.
Booking Tip: Comparing hotel prices on Skyscanner to check stay prices across different OTA platforms. booking. Mostly Trip.com and Agoda offer better pricing in Taiwan.
🚆 How to travel around Taiwan without overspending
Taiwan's public transport and organised tours can make a big difference to your budget.
1. 🚇 Use public transport in Taipei
Sarit travelled from the airport to Taipei by bus on arrival and used the MRT for another airport journey. He recalled paying approximately NT$133 for the airport bus and NT$160 for the MRT. These are his reported fares and should not be treated as current prices.
For airport transfers, compare the airport MRT, buses and taxis before choosing.
2. 🚌 Use organised shared day tours for distant attractions
Many of the sightseeing days involved long journeys outside Taipei. He booked shared group tours, which included transport between several attractions and a guide.
He found these useful for destinations where taking a private taxi would have been expensive. He also booked tours ahead of time, usually around a week before travelling, to reduce the risk of cancellations or unavailable seats.

🚍 Compare intercity transport options
12Go Asia can help you compare available transport options on supported routes, including trains, buses and other listed services. Use it to understand journey times and indicative prices before committing to an itinerary.
Taxis are expensive, particularly for longer journeys. Before starting a ride, check the fare estimate or meter and compare it with public transport or an organised tour.
Uber was one of the apps he used locally, alongside Google Maps and Google Lens.
🗓️ Taiwan itinerary: 8 days of nature, culture and local experiences
Keep your arrival day relatively light.
After reaching Taipei, check in, rest and explore your neighbourhood. Sarit stayed in Wanhua, an older district of Taipei, and spent his first evening discovering the local food scene.
He visited Nanjichang Night Market, where he tried Taiwanese food, including fried pork, chicken and milk tea. He also enjoyed the atmosphere of families, students and locals gathering around food stalls.
What to do
🏨 Check in and familiarise yourself with the nearest MRT station.
🏮 Explore a local night market.
🍗 Sample Taiwanese street food.
💵 Carry some cash for smaller food stalls.
Food note: If you are vegetarian, vegan or have dietary restrictions, confirm the ingredients and cooking methods before ordering. Dishes that appear vegetable-based may contain animal-derived stock, sauces or oils.
📍 Day 1: Arrive in Taipei and explore a night market
🪨 Day 2: Yehliu Geopark, Jiufen, Shifen and Golden Waterfall
Sarit began his first major sightseeing day early, joining a shared excursion to several destinations in northern Taiwan.
Yehliu Geopark 🪨
Yehliu is known for its distinctive coastal rock formations, including the famous Queen's Head. The area involves considerable walking, and exploring more of the park can require additional time and steps.

Jiufen Old Street 🏮
Jiufen is a hillside destination known for its narrow lanes, traditional shops, snacks and tea-house atmosphere. Expect steps and slopes while exploring.
Shifen Old Street 🎐
Shifen is associated with its railway-side market streets and sky lantern tradition. Visitors can explore the shops and, where permitted, participate in lantern activities. Always follow local safety and environmental rules.
Golden Waterfall 💧
This scenic waterfall is another popular stop in the wider Jiufen area. Its appearance and the surrounding landscape make it an interesting addition to a northern Taiwan day trip.

💡 Planning advice: These places are spread out, so allow for transport between stops and limited time at each attraction on a group tour. If you prefer a slower pace or have mobility limitations, consider splitting the excursion across two days.
🌷 Day 3: Zhongshe Flower Market, Rainbow Village and Gaomei Wetlands
This was another full day of sightseeing, with several contrasting stops.
Zhongshe Flower Market 🌷
Sarit visited Zhongshe Flower Market during the spring flowering season. He was particularly impressed by the colourful gardens, including tulips and other flowers.
If you are planning a spring trip, check the garden's opening information and flowering conditions before visiting. Blooming displays depend on the season and weather.
Rainbow Village 🎨
Rainbow Village is known for its brightly painted houses and colourful murals. Sarit described how the artwork helped preserve the character of the village as the surrounding area developed.
The colourful streets make this a distinctive stop for photography and a short cultural visit.
Gaomei Wetlands 🌅
The day ended at Gaomei Wetlands, a coastal area known for its open landscape, sea views and wind turbines. Sarit particularly enjoyed the sunset atmosphere.
Because these attractions are far from central Taipei, transport planning matters. A shared tour can simplify the journey, but expect several hours of travel and a late return.

🌋 Day 4: Yangmingshan National Park and Beitou
For travellers interested in nature, this was one of the most distinctive days of Sarit's trip.
Yangmingshan National Park 🌋
Yangmingshan is known for volcanic terrain, geothermal features, mountain scenery and seasonal flowers. Sarit described seeing steam and bubbling geothermal areas, followed by a walk towards a higher viewpoint.
Walking distances depend on the trail and stops selected. Wear sturdy shoes and check trail access, weather and safety guidance before setting out.
Beitou ♨️
Beitou is associated with hot springs and geothermal landscapes. Sarit visited the area and described a striking blue-green geothermal stream, older trees and a relaxing park setting.
It offers a contrast to the more strenuous hiking and sightseeing earlier in the day.

Cherry blossoms 🌸
Sarit also visited a park in the Yangmingshan area to see cherry blossoms. If blossoms are a priority, plan around current flowering reports rather than relying on fixed dates.
Who should choose this day? Nature lovers, photographers and travellers interested in geothermal landscapes. Those who prefer less walking can select fewer stops and allow more time at each location.

🚲 Day 5: Sun Moon Lake and its scenic cycling route
Sun Moon Lake was one of the major excursions from Sarit's Taipei base.
The journey took several hours each way, but the scenery made the long travel day worthwhile for him.
His excursion included a boat ride and a visit to an island area with a temple reached by climbing steps. He also cycled along sections of the lakeside route, enjoying views of the water and surrounding hills.
What to experience
🚤 Take a boat trip on Sun Moon Lake.
🛕 Visit a lakeside or island temple.
🚴 Explore part of the cycling route.
📸 Enjoy the landscape and local food.

Sarit described cycling approximately 10–15 km during his excursion, although the exact distance and route depend on the tour and the sections open to visitors.
If you enjoy cycling, check whether bike rental and transfers are included in your tour. If you prefer a relaxed visit, choose a shorter route and allow more time for the lake and viewpoints.

🐬 Day 6: Guishan Island and dolphin watching
Sarit joined a trip to Guishan Island, also known as Turtle Island, for dolphin watching and the possibility of seeing whales.
The excursion involved a transfer to the departure point and a boat trip out to sea. Although he did not see whales, he described seeing a large number of dolphins swimming around the boat as one of his most memorable experiences.
This is a good example of why Taiwan offers more than city sightseeing: the island's coastal waters provide opportunities for marine wildlife excursions.

Before booking
🚐 Check the departure location and total transfer time.
🗣️ Confirm whether the tour is available in a language you understand.
🌦️ Check the cancellation policy and weather-related restrictions.
🐬 Remember that wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.
🏙️ Day 7: Explore Taipei at your own pace
After several demanding day trips, Sarit kept one day relatively flexible.
He explored local streets around Ximending, visited shopping areas and malls, enjoyed Taiwanese food and revisited places where he had made friends during the trip.
This is a useful approach to itinerary planning: leave at least one day flexible for experiences that are difficult to schedule in advance.
Ideas for your free day
🛍️ Explore Ximending and its pedestrian-friendly shopping streets.
🛕 Visit a local museum or temple.
☕ Browse markets and cafés.
📷 Revisit a favourite neighbourhood.
🍜 Try Taiwanese dishes you have not yet sampled.
Sarit had also considered visiting Taroko Gorge, but he cancelled his planned excursion after learning that earthquake-related damage had affected access to the area during his trip.
⚠️ Important: Taroko Gorge access and trail conditions can change. Check the latest official park announcements and local transport information before including it in your itinerary.

✈️ Day 8: Breakfast, last-minute exploration and departure
Keep your final morning simple.
Sarit enjoyed breakfast, checked out and took the MRT to the airport for his return flight.
Leave enough time for the airport journey, check-in and any immigration or airline requirements. If your flight is around midday, avoid planning a distant attraction on the same morning.
🍜 Try Taiwanese dishes you have not yet sampled.
💰 Taiwan travel budget: How much should you plan for?
Taiwan is not necessarily a budget destination in the same way as Thailand or Malaysia. However, it can offer good value compared with some longer-haul destinations, depending on flights, accommodation and the type of activities you choose.
Sarit shared the following approximate costs from his eight-day solo trip.
✈️ Flights : Approximately ₹25,000–₹30,000 one way
🏨 Accommodation: Approximately ₹4,500 per night(for his chosen hotel)
🚆 Local travel and activities : Around ₹50,000–₹70,000
💳 Overall trip : Estimate around ₹1.5 lakh per person
The exact total depends on your travel dates, hotel category, tour selection, food preferences and exchange rate.
💡 How to save money in Taiwan
🏨Compare hotels in well-connected neighbourhoods rather than choosing only the most central locations.
🚇 Use public transport for airport transfers and city travel where practical.
🚌 Compare shared tours on platforms like Klook with transport for distant attractions.
📅 Book popular day tours early, while checking cancellation terms.
🍜 Use night markets for a range of food options, but verify ingredients if you have dietary restrictions.
✈️ Compare flights across multiple dates and connection options.
🎟️ Check whether any eligible cashback or promotional offers apply to your bookings.
🍜 Food in Taiwan: What should Indian travellers know?
Food was one of the highlights of Sarit's trip. He enjoyed local night markets, fried pork, chicken dishes, milk tea and fresh sandwiches.
However, he also noted that the language barrier made it difficult to understand menus and ingredients.
Taiwan can require additional food planning for vegetarians and vegans. Do not assume that a dish is vegetarian just because it contains vegetables or has no visible meat.
📱 Download HappyCow app for Veg food options anywhere in Taiwan.
🥣 Ask about meat stock, fish sauce, lard & other animal-derived ingredients.
📝 Carry a translated dietary restriction card.
🥬 Look for clearly labelled vegetarian restaurants when possible.
🔎 Check ingredients before ordering snacks and sauces.
If you eat meat, you may find a wider selection of local dishes at night markets. Trying unfamiliar food can be part of the experience, but choose food vendors and preparation methods that suit your comfort level.

⚠️ Taiwan travel mistakes to avoid
1. 🚶 Underestimating walking distances
A tour advertised as three attractions in one day can involve long walks, stairs, slopes and substantial time on your feet. Sarit reported walking approximately 30–32 km on one of his most demanding days.
2. 💸 Assuming Taiwan is cheap everywhere
Hotels in central areas and private transport can be expensive. Compare different neighbourhoods and transport modes before finalising your budget.
3. 📅 Leaving shared tours until the last minute
Popular tours may sell out or be cancelled when minimum group sizes are not met. Book ahead where possible and have a backup plan.
4. 🗣️ Ignoring the language barrier
Not everyone will speak English, and tour commentary or safety instructions may not always be available in your preferred language. Confirm language arrangements before booking.
5. 🛌 Planning every day at the same intensity
A long day followed by another strenuous excursion can be exhausting. Consider alternating demanding tours with easier city days.
6. 🌸 Relying on a single seasonal attraction
If cherry blossoms are the main reason for your trip, remember that flowering dates change. Include other attractions so your holiday remains worthwhile if the blossoms peak earlier or later than expected.
7. 🔎 Assuming every attraction is open
Earthquakes, weather, maintenance and local restrictions can affect access. Verify current conditions for places such as Taroko Gorge before travelling.
🧍 Is Taiwan safe for solo travellers?
Sarit described his solo experience as comfortable and felt that Taiwan was a good destination for independent exploration. He also enjoyed meeting people at night markets and other local spots.
Nevertheless, no destination is completely risk-free. Use ordinary precautions: keep valuables secure, check transport arrangements, follow local guidance and share your itinerary with someone you trust.
For solo travellers, organised group tours can also be a practical way to explore remote attractions without arranging private transport.
❓ FAQs about planning a Taiwan trip
How many days are enough for Taiwan?
Seven to eight days is a useful starting point for a trip combining Taipei, northern Taiwan day trips, Yangmingshan and Sun Moon Lake. Longer trips allow you to explore additional regions without rushing.
💰 Is Taiwan expensive for Indian tourists?
It depends on your travel style. Flights, accommodation in central areas and private taxis can increase costs. Public transport, shared day tours and careful hotel selection can help control the budget.
🛂 Can Indian passport holders visit Taiwan using a US or Schengen visa?
Some Indian passport holders may qualify for Taiwan's Travel Authorization Certificate if they meet the official eligibility criteria. An existing visa alone is not sufficient; check the current rules and apply through the official portal before departure.
🌸 Is Taiwan worth visiting beyond cherry blossom season?
Yes. Taiwan offers coastal scenery, mountains, geothermal areas, lakes, temples, markets and distinctive food experiences throughout the year. Weather and seasonal conditions will influence which activities are most suitable.
🧳 Is Taiwan suitable for solo travellers?
Taiwan can be suitable for solo travel, particularly if you are comfortable using public transport, translation apps and organised tours. Plan carefully for remote destinations and check the language offered on tours.
🚆 Is public transport enough to explore Taiwan?
Public transport is useful for city travel and many intercity journeys. For remote attractions, shared day tours or other pre-arranged transfers may be more practical. Compare routes and journey times before deciding.
🥬 What should vegetarians know before travelling to Taiwan?
Check ingredients carefully because stocks, sauces and cooking oils may contain animal products. Translation tools and dietary cards can help you communicate your requirements.
🏞️ Can I visit Taroko Gorge on my Taiwan trip?
Potentially, but access conditions may change after earthquakes or other disruptions. Verify current official park and transport information before booking.
Final thoughts:
Is Taiwan worth adding to your travel bucket list?
Sarit’s eight-day trip demonstrates how much variety Taiwan can offer within a relatively compact island. One day might involve unusual coastal rock formations, another a colourful flower garden, and another volcanic landscapes, a scenic lake or a boat trip to see dolphins.
The most important lesson is to plan around travel time, physical effort and transport costs rather than simply counting attractions. Choose accommodation strategically, book distant excursions in advance, prepare for the language barrier and leave some time to discover local markets and neighbourhoods at your own pace.
If you are looking for a destination that combines nature, culture, food and experiences beyond the usual tourist circuit, Taiwan deserves a place on your travel list.
